Walking by —
Staring at the clay gorilla.
It stands out to me
Among the rest of the art.
Its two different eyes:
One looking at me,
The other blind.
The clay gorilla speaks to me.
These are words that can't be heard but are seen —
Listening and speaking.
It is alive.
The gorilla that sits there in the hallway overnight
(Next to all of the other pieces of artwork)
Is just like me.
No hands,
No body,
No legs,No arms.
But it stands there, listening to others' conversations.
Listening to them but not engaging —
Just like me.
I sit there at family reunions, while others are laughing and talking to each other.
I sit in my chair next to everyone, not engaging unless others start the conversation.
I get up to leave while others don't notice anything has changed.
I am the clay gorilla.
I blend in with the rest of the art but stand out to some.
I’m just like my father whom I resemble,
But he also blends in with the rest of the art.
This clay gorilla can't move but lives just like me.
The gorilla has a purpose.
No matter if it was a project or for fun.
Everything has a purpose.
